“NEWSCHANNEL 5” Anchor Wilma Smith’s broadcasting career began in 1972 at WXEX-TV in Richmond, Virginia where she hosted and produced a daily hour-long talk show. She also anchored the 6 p.m. weekday newscasts, giving her the distinction of being Virginia’s first female anchor in primetime. She joined WEWS-TV (Cleveland) in 1977 and is the recipient of 8 Emmy Awards for excellence in her work. Smith has received many other awards of distinction, including selection as “Cleveland’s Most Watchable Woman”, “Best Anchorperson in Cleveland”, and “Anchor of Excellence”. Smith was also honored as “Cleveland’s Citizen of the Year for Community Service and Contribution to the Arts”. |
