Tommy Edwards was one of the country’s leading disc jockeys in the 1950’s. His radio career began in Spencer , Iowa . Four years at KICD were followed by four years at WOKY ( Milwaukee )…but it was the eight years he spent at WERE that were most memorable. During that time, he became the first to publish a newsletter about the music industry. The T.E. Newsletter summarized the week at #1 rated WERE, told people what artists were “in”, etc. It was distributed to agency people, music publishers, columnists and disc jockeys from coast-to-coast. Edwards was also the first person to bring Elvis Presley north of the Mason-Dixon Line . Edwards spent three years at WADC ( Akron ) before he opened Tommy Edwards Records in 1962. By the time of his death in 1981, it had become one of the biggest country and oldies stores in the world. (The store is still in operation, owned by Chuck Rambaldo.) |
