Tom Armstrong* The Master of Low Key, Tom Armstrong, was a staple in
Cleveland
Radio for over 30 years. A native of
Sharon
,
Pennsylvania
, Armstrong attended the
University
of
Michigan
as a pre-med student but his true interest was in nearby
Detroit
where he became a voice on such classic shows as “The Green Hornet”
and “The Lone Ranger”. He switched his major to speech and planned an
acting career. In 1943, he joined the nighttime staff of WGAR where he did
station breaks and anchored live broadcasts from the city’s night scene.
He became a morning person in 1954 and helped wake up
Cleveland
for most of the remainder of his life. He worked for WGAR for 25 years and
later for WBBG and WDOK FM. During his radio lifetime, the business
changed dramatically, but Tom Armstrong remained loyal to his warm,
low-key style. His magical voice was the reason The Plain Dealer Magazine
dubbed him The Eternal Disc Jockey.
