Robert
Sassaman
WLND
is neither the biggest nor the most powerful station with which Robert
Sassaman has been involved during his 33 year radio and television career.
But it was here that he had a golden opportunity to combine modern
technology with old fashion horse sense. In that Courtland,
Ohio
town he tried to install AM 830’s transmitter in a field – a very large,
muddy field. No truck could get through the mud. Sassaman, knowing the show
must go on, hired a team of horses and sleigh to pull the transmitter from
the road to the building.
Sassaman’s earliest involvement was
with WTIG, Massillon, Ohio, where he worked for four years as an announcer.
He was then named Operations Manager for that station.
He has spent many years working with
educational radio and was instrumental in
Northwest
School District
’s attempt to create a station for their students. This resulted in WNWR,
the third largest high school student-operated station in
Ohio
. He also rebuilt WAPS, the
Akron
City
School
radio station and established a television station for them.
Following employment as an engineer in
Akron
and
Canton
, he joined WNIR as the Chief Engineer for their AM and FM Facilities.
During this past year, he successfully established the
Akron
area’s newest television station WAI TV 29.
