Paige
Palmer

tribute to broadcasting would be complete without a chapter dedicated to one
of the foremost female pioneers – Paige Palmer. In 1943, Paige Palmer was
host of New York City’s original woman’s television show in the Gertz
Department Store on Long Island, N.Y. The debut of the Paige Palmer Show on
WEWS TV, Cleveland, was in 1947 and the First Lady of Fitness continued
there for 25 years.
During much of the same time, she
also hosted shows on WAKR TV, Akron and KDKA TV, Pittsburgh. From 1973
through 1983, Paige Palmer had a radio show on WELW, Cleveland.
Her many television awards include
the American Federation of Television and Radio Artist’s Best Women’s
Show for 1953-54-56-57-58 and the Favorite TV Personality Award from the
Press Club of Cleveland for 1959-60-61-64-67. In 1968 and 1969, she earned
the prestigious F.R.A.N.Y. Award for the National Best of Fashion
Presentations in the United States. In 1991, she received the Communicator
of Achievement Award from the Ohio Professional Writers Association.
In addition to her Radio/TV work,
Palmer has written 20 books and hundreds of articles and booklets on travel
and fashion. She is a charter member of American Women in Radio and
Television. She continues to write and broadcast about such topics as the
Cleveland Museums of Art and Natural History, the Ohio Ballet and the Bath
Historical Society.
