Karl Bates

      Karl Bates was born in 1914 and started in radio at WJW in Akron in 1937, first as staff announcer and later as chief announcer. He did wrestling matches, poetry programs and announced the first coast-to-coast radio show of Carson Robison Country-Western music on the Mutual Broadcasting System. In 1938 and 1939, he broadcasted the All American Soap Box Derby on Mutual along with Graham McNamee and Ted Husing. During World War II, he was selected to announce such coast-to-coast programs as “Meet the Press”, “American Forum of the Air” working with Fulton Lewis, Walter Cronkite, Bill Henry and Eric Severeid.
      At present, he is Program Director of WLEC in Sandusky , Ohio .
