America’s Polka King Frankie Yankovic’s 65-year broadcasting career began in radio in 1930. His WEWS (Cleveland) television show ran for 27 years. He has also hosted other television programs in Cleveland and Buffalo, New York and has appeared on many national television shows. Yankovic was one of the first to be inducted into the IPA Polka Hall of Fame and was the first to be inducted into the Ironworld USA Polka Hall of Fame. He was one of the first five to be inducted into the Cleveland Polka Hall of Fame and was the first polka star to win a Grammy in 1986. A documentary on Frankie Yankovic (his life story) was broadcast on PBS. It was produced by Tom Ciscelka and hosted by Myron Floren and won an Emmy in 1995. He was the only Slovenian polka artist to have a full-length biography and a PBS documentary. Frank passed away on October 14, 1998 at his home in New Port Richey, Florida, at the age of 83. |
