Fred C.
Pockrandt *
Fred Pockrandt
was a pioneer in radio broadcasting in
Akron
. He was born in 1891 and died in 1971. As a prominent civic leader and
executive with the Acme-Click Stores, he began informative and educational
radio programs in 1929 on WADC, and continued with daily and weekly
broadcasts on WADC and WAKR for 30 years. His historical talks and
interviews with outstanding
Akron
personalities and various celebrities strongly appealed to students and
teachers as well as the listening public. In the late thirties, Pockrandt
began a series known as “The Acme Man”. These broadcasts recounted
stories of products, manufacturing and national events gleaned from his
extensive travels throughout the country. He retired in 1959.
