Fred C. Pockrandt *

      Fred Pockrandt was a pioneer in radio broadcasting in Akron . He was born in 1891 and died in 1971. As a prominent civic leader and executive with the Acme-Click Stores, he began informative and educational radio programs in 1929 on WADC, and continued with daily and weekly broadcasts on WADC and WAKR for 30 years. His historical talks and interviews with outstanding Akron personalities and various celebrities strongly appealed to students and teachers as well as the listening public. In the late thirties, Pockrandt began a series known as “The Acme Man”. These broadcasts recounted stories of products, manufacturing and national events gleaned from his extensive travels throughout the country. He retired in 1959.
