Cecil
Patrick, the Chair of Radio Seaway, Inc., was employed as a Consultant in
1960 to put WDGO on the air. In 1962, he bought the station and changed the
Call Letters to WCLV!
During his years as President and
General Manager (with partner Robert Conrad as Vice President and Program
Director), WCLV became a leader of the classical music stations in the
country.
In 1965, WCLV began live, weekly
broadcasts and syndications of the Cleveland Orchestra. Patrick co-founded
the Annual WCLV Marathon for the Cleveland Orchestra and served as Chair for
23 years.
He was told for six years that an
FM station could never join the Metropolitan Opera Network but his
persistence paid off. In 1969, WCLV became the first FM station added to the
network.
Patrick also oversaw the design
and construction of a 13,000’ one-story brick building for WCLV’s
business, sales, engineering and transmitting equipment with a 506’
self-supporting tower.
