Calvin
S. Holm *
Cal
started out in radio at WTMJ in
Milwaukee
in 1950. In 1954, he went to Europe as a radio reporter for the Armed
Forces, covering the NATO meeting in
Paris
and the nine-power conference in
London
. Then in 1956, he was employed by WAKR in
Akron
, as a newscaster and remained at WAKR until 1967. During his hours of duty
in the newsroom at WAKR, he put the bulletin on the air of President
Kennedy’s assassination. He had also been on duty on the Sunday that the
Russian ship turned back to end the Cuban Missile Crisis and, perhaps, the
threat of imminent war.
Cal
served on the committee that revised the
Akron
City
Charter. He retired in 1982 from his
Milwaukee
’s WTMJ radio and television career to join the staff of Mayor Henry
Maier. He died in May of 2001.
